Glebe’s Terrace Houses are a charming reminder of Sydney’s past but\u00a0 owning and renovating one comes with many hurdles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"GlebeAccording to the Australian Council of National Trusts, the Sydney inner west suburb of Glebe \u201cpossesses probably the largest stock of Victorian cottages and terraces, grouped in the same townscape, to be found in Australia. On recognition of its value, the National Trust has declared Glebe to be an essential component of the nation\u2019s architectural and historic heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Between the 1850s and 1890s, rows and rows of terrace houses were built in Glebe to accommodate the population boom caused by the Gold Rush as well as to house the growing population living and working in Sydney\u2019s Inner West.<\/p>\n

The building of these Victorian terraced houses in Glebe came to a standstill as the Great Depression hit with many of the homes falling into decline during the early part of the 20th<\/sup> century. By the 1960s, Glebe\u2019s Victorian cottages and terraces received a much needed renewed appreciation and Glebe became one of the first suburbs in Australia to undergo gentrification.<\/p>\n

This gentrification and the protection of Glebe\u2019s architectural heritage continues today. Peter Shield of Ray white Erskineville says, \u201cThe supply of terraces just can\u2019t keep up with demand now,\u201d as many developers and home renovators flock to make part of Sydney\u2019s rich history their home.<\/p>\n

Principal of the architectural practice MCK, Mark Cashman, believes that renovating an old terrace can cost upwards of $6000 a square metre. This means that is incredibly important to have a specialist carry out a Building and Pest Inspection<\/a>. You wouldn\u2019t want those charming period features to come back to haunt you!<\/p>\n
